Welcome to the 2019 Global BIGGIES Awards competition, which aims to reward media companies’ best practices in Data and Artificial Intelligence products, projects and strategies.

The BIGGIES Awards draw participation from the most innovative media companies implementing data and artificial intelligence initiatives, and is a part of the 10th Data & AI for Media Week events in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, in their eighth year.

The BIGGIES Awards Gala and Opening Reception will be in San Francisco on 2 May 2019.

ELIGIBILITY

Print and digital publications, broadcast outlets, and marketing and advertising agencies and technology companies located anywhere in Europe, the Middle East and Africa are eligible to submit entries.

The 2019 Global BIGGIES Awards are divided into two groups: A and B

  1. Media including newspapers, magazines and digital publications, broadcast, advertising agencies and marketing agencies that circulate/broadcast widely in three or more countries in the world, considered to be international media.
  2. Media including newspapers, magazines and online publications, broadcast, advertising agencies and marketing agencies that circulate/broadcast primarily in one area or location, considered to be regional, local or niche media.

RULES

Each entry must be submitted electronically on https://BIGGIES.awardsplatform.com and must include the following. Entries start 13 November, 2018:

  • 500- to 600-word description of the entry, including the reason it deserves to win the award.
  • Completed online entry form.
  • Entries by email will not be accepted.
  • Entries can be in either English or another language, and must have been published any time during the calendar year 2018. 

Conditions of participations:

  1. Entry forms must be in English.
  2. Multiple entries: Your company may submit as many entries as you wish. 
  3. An easy-to-handle, special feature in the Awards Submission Software also allows entrants to submit the same entry in different categories. 
  4. Entrants are responsible for their submitted content. Material that was not specifically prepared by your company is not eligible. 
  5. Please do not include confidential information in your entries.
  6. Big Data for Media is not responsible for materials entered in the competition.
  7. Big Data for Media reserves the right to publish the entries. 

NOTE TO ENTRANTS 

Contest rules must be followed carefully in order to avoid disqualification. Each entry must include a description of the project and the reasons why the entry deserves to win the award.

Reasons for disqualification:

  • Non-paid entries
  • Incomplete entries or poorly, imprecisely submitted entries
  • Every entry must have at least one attachment/image
  • Disqualified entries will not be judged

Award Categories

BIGGIES Award categories are open to all publications (print, mobile, online), broadcast, websites, ad agencies and marketing agencies in the world.

Judging Criteria

Big Data for Media will select a Jury Panel of international experts, which will conduct the evaluation process of the BIGGIES entries.

The following criteria will be considered in the evaluation:

  • The relevance and gravitas of the data-driven initiative
  • Creativity in the implementation of the data project
  • Inclusion of concrete examples in leveraging data
  • Visual material included to support the entry
  • Results/outcome in terms of audience engagement/monetisation
Excellence in Data Analytics

Data analytics is the lifeblood of the media or marketing company’s audience strategy, and the first step in understanding and engaging audiences. This award will be given to the media or marketing company that has created an innovative and strategic data analytics project or strategy that has gone beyond the collection of audience data, and has identified engagement, monetisation or other pro-active practices to leverage the data. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s data analytics best practices, along with examples, and visual materials (in PDF or JPEG formats) to illustrate the case study.

Excellence in Data Strategy

Strategy is the engine that drives data and / or artificial intelligence practices in media and marketing companies. This award will be given to a media or marketing company that has implemented a data and / or AI strategy and is achieving impressive results from their innovative efforts. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s data strategy, along with examples and visual materials (in PDF or JPEG formats) to illustrate the case study.

Excellence in data-driven advertising campaign (non-programmatic)

Data drives the majority of advertising placements on desktop and mobile Internet, and enables targeting of audience groups and specialised campaigns. The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has conducted a data-driven, advertising campaign on Internet platforms, not including programmatic campaigns, with its success attributed to the use of data to drive the campaign results. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s campaign, including campaign metrics, such as reach, targeting parameters, engagement and any other metric that exemplifies success. Include the campaign itself, as well as video, display or other ad units.

Excellence in data-driven programmatic advertising

Programmatic advertising is automated by leveraging data for targeted audience and ad placement sites. The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has conducted a data-driven, programmatic advertising campaign on Internet platforms, with its success attributed to the use of data to drive the campaign results. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s campaign, including campaign metrics, such as reach, targeting parameters, engagement and any other metric that exemplifies success. Include the campaign itself, as well as video, display or other ad units.

Excellence in data-driven business process efficiency

Data-driven insights and algorithms can help drive business process efficiencies. For example, data-driven technologies and trained data professionals can identify wastage, accurately predict solutions for inefficiencies, speed processes with enabling technologies, and automate otherwise onerous tasks. The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has created a successful project or projects that have created measurable business efficiencies. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s solutions and include metrics to show the success achieved with this efficiency, such as cost savings, speed improvement, automation or wastage reduction. Include charts or visuals, where appropriate.

Excellence in data-driven product development

Audience and other business data can powerfully inform product development.  The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has created a successful product or products that have created measurable business outcome. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s data-driven products and include metrics to show the success achieved with this product, such as increased audience, more engagement, increased sales or other metrics. Include charts or other visuals, as appropriate.

Excellence in use of artificial intelligence (non-bot)

Artificial intelligence is the media and marketing industries’ next big opportunity. The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has leveraged artificial intelligence technologies or algorithms for business or journalistic purposes in order to engage, drive business objectives or otherwise improve company processes or output. This award is given for non-bot projects. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s AI-driven project, product or process. Include charts or other visuals, as appropriate, to underscore AI the success.

Excellence in use of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning

NLP is a field of Artificial Intelligence focused on the intersection of computer and human languages, and includes robo-journalism and automated news briefings narrowcast on Alexa home and other AI assistants. Machine learning drives AI algorithms to personalise news feeds or target advertising, for example. The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has leveraged NLP and/or machine learning technologies for business or journalistic purposes in order to engage, drive business objectives or otherwise improve company processes or output. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s NLP and/or machine learning project, product or process. Include charts or other visuals, as appropriate, to underscore the project’s success.

Excellence in use of predictive analytics

Predictive analytics is a subset of statistics that allows data analysts to forecast trends and behaviours from statistical data. For example, predictive models can analyse audience data — or advertising, subscription, or membership transactional data — to identify patterns and the potential opportunities the patterns present, such as sales or personalised targeted content.  The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has leveraged predictive analytics technologies for business or journalistic purposes in order to engage, drive business objectives or otherwise improve company processes or output. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s predictive analytics project, product or process. Include charts or other visuals, as appropriate, to underscore the project’s success.

Excellence in the use of creativity in data-driven projects and campaigns.

Creativity is in the eye of the beholder. In data projects and campaigns, creativity can be the excellent use of technology, design, content or all of the above, to drive the success of the project or campaign. Focus on the visual elements of your project that enhance creativity.

Excellence in use of a data-driven technology

Entries can either be developed in-house or purchased from a vendor.  Excellence in data technology will be judged by business performance metrics, such as driving audience growth, revenue, or other positive business metrics. Vendors can recommend and encourage media and agency clients to enter their partnered projects and campaigns, but cannot enter themselves. Include a concise description of the technology as well as links to your best performing data technology cases.

Excellence in use of bots

The award will be given to a media or marketing company that has leveraged artificial intelligence technologies or algorithms for business or journalistic purposes in order to engage, drive business objectives or otherwise improve company processes or output. This award is given for bot projects either inside the organization, or consumer-facing. Submit a 500- to 600-word description of the company’s AI-driven bot project, product or process. Include charts or other visuals, as appropriate, to underscore the project’s success.

BIGGIES Best of Show

Judges will decide which of the above winners have earned the top recognition of the best data-driven project, product or process of the 2018 BIGGIES Big Data for Media Awards.

Selection of Winners

Among the finalists, the Jury will select a Gold entry (corresponding to the first place), a Silver entry (second place), and a Bronze entry (third place) for each group within each category. Out of these winning-entries, the Jury will select the “Best in Show” entry.

BIGGIES Entry Fees

A participation fee of $150 will be charged per entry, independently of the category to which it will be submitted.

Please note that no refund will be made after submitting the entries.
